Electrostatic Self Assembly
Industrial scale “Layer-by-layer”
- Waterborne process, very low energy consumption
- No vacuum or high temperature baking required
- Relies on attraction between two complementary molecules to build up coatings one layer at a time
- Typically a positively charged polymer and a negatively charged polymer or nanoparticle
- Incrementally build to the desired thickness, add multi-functionality by stacking films and layers
- Transfer a functional film to another substrate with downstream processing on site

Ion exchange and nanoparticle loading
- Similar to the 3-D beads in deionizing resin beds, but customized for 2-D high surface area coatings
- The product is the bead surface, but in sheet form
- Load blends of ions into a functional coating via ion-exchange
- Optionally grow catalytic nanoparticles of specific size and shape
- Ideal for turning a passive coating into an active thin film to add functionality

Gravure coating
- Apply a layer of the desired solid dissolved in water or a small amount of cosolvent
- Wet film thickness is metered by the volume contained within small pits on the surface of a gravure roller
- Final wet thickness can then be refined using metering rods with higher precision than a gravure roller alone
- Prior to solvent removal, the bumps settle into a smooth layer
- Solvent is removed by convective dryer to leave a dry film of desired thickness and residual moisture content
